Senior Catcher hits homer in bottom of the 8th, Mattie Bredeson twirls three hitter

Lodi gave Poynette all it wanted today at Diamond of Champions. Senior catcher Riley Barnharst hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to break up a 1-1 tie and send the Pumas to their 13th victory of the season. It was the first of six games the Pumas will play over three days.

Poynette's sophomore pitcher Mattie Bredeson rose to the occasion today. She allowed one run on just three hits, walked two, hit one and fanned a dozen to get the win. "On a day when a team needs its pitcher to toss a gem, Mattie came up with one that sparkled," said Poynette coach Bob Tomlinson. "She pitched out of a couple of jams and got strikeouts when the team needed them.

The Pumas got a double and triple from junior second sacker Meagan Brookins. She scored the first run of the game after she doubled in the third inning. She stole third and scored when the throw from the catcher got out into left field.

The Blue Devils knotted the game with back-to-back hits from pitcher Hailey Hellenbrand and a double down the left field line by Kendra Nicolay. That knotted the game in the sixth. The Bredeson pitched out of trouble as she fanned Dani Breuing and after an intentional walk to Anna Manke Katie Conklin hit a ball up the middle just to the right of second. Brookins made a spectacular play to get Manke at second for the second out and held the lead runner to third. Bredeson then got Joye Hellenbrand on a liner to short to end the inning.
