Minnesota's Border battle team

Woodside Sports Complex-Wisconsin Dells - The Minnesota/Wisconsin Border Battle series continued today here with the two teams splitting the doubleheader. Wisconsin won the opener 6-1 while Minnesota took game 2 with a score of 5-4.

Kelsie Packard (Beloit Turner High School) tossed a one-hitter and fanned 13 to pick up the win. It was a pretty typical game for the righthander with just one hit, balls back to the screen that allowed a few baserunners to advance but in the end a strikeout to end a threat in several innings.

Wisconsin jumped on Minnesota starting pitcher Kennedy Haney (Maple Lake High School) for four runs in the bottom of the second inning en route to a 6-1 win in game one. Stephanie Lombardo (New Berlin Eisenhower High School) homered deep just a bit to the left of center for Wisconsin.

In game two the Minnesota girls trailed Wisconsin 2-0 after the top of the first as Wisconsin jumped out in front against starting pitcher Kelsey McAllister (Centennial High School).

Minnesota cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the second inning. The Gopher State girls added another run in the bottom of the second to knot the score at 2-2.

The top of the fourth saw Wisconsin plate two more off McAllister.

Wisconsin sent Katie Schlegel to the circle in the bottom of the sixth. Minnesota started building an inning and aided by a tight call that went their way wound up with the bases loaded and down by one. Schlegel ran into control issues and before the inning was over walked in the tying run and then the go-ahead run.

In the top of the seventh Kerrigan Hoshaw (Eastview High School) retired the side in order to get the win.

VanDuyse went five innings, allowed just two hits, one earned run, walked three and fanned three. Schlegel allowed three earned runs on three hits, three walks and struck out one.

Wisconsin players with at least one hit included: Lombardo (2x3, 2 runs); Justine Shattner (Wilmot High School 1x3, one run); Abby Menting (Kimberly High School, 1x3, 2 rbi); Brennan Engel (Beaver Dam High School, 1x2, 2 rbi); Makayla Pagel (DC Everest High School, 1x2); and Kelsie Packard (Beloit Turner High School, 1x1, 1 BB).

Minnesota Players with at least one hit included: McKenzie Paap (Minnetonka High School, 2x3, 1 run), Kylie Olson (Maple River High School, 1x2, 1 run, 1 rbi); Julia Luciano (Eastview High School, 1x3, 1 rbi); Hoshaw (Eastview High School, 1x1, 2 runs).

Minnesota now leads the six-year series 6-5-1.
