Walk off Homer for Dani Treinen

“And on the mound for .......”

That’s one of the first things we heard at Goodman Diamond on Thursday when DeForest and Germantown kicked off what was to be a wet, rain-delayed long weekend for players and fans.

Any good fastpitch fan knows there is no mound in fastpitch softball. Yet that is what the announcer for that game announced when doing the game.

There were also some scoring glitches and scorebook and stat related issues. For instance, Bloomer used two pitchers in its game with Laconia but only the starting pitcher is listed in the official stat report.

Another new thing was the edict from someone that no games could start after 10:00 PM. The second division 3 semi-final between Bloomer and Laconia had to be postponed until Saturday morning at 9:30 and had to be played in Verona. So Bloomer was the only one of the 20 state tournament participants that did not get to play on the Goodman Diamond surface. The scheduled 12:30 PM game between Lomira and Poynette did not get started until 9:45 and was in jeopardy as well.

A rare occurrence if not a first occurence at a state tournament took place really late on Friday night. I’m not sure if any or how many walk off home runs have been hit in the history of the WIAA State Softball Tournament. Friday night at 11:30 PM Poynette’s Dani Treinen hit one over the leftfield fence. It was a solo blast that broke a 3-3 tie and propelled Poynette into the championship game. If there has been any previous walk off home runs they would have had to have occurred since 2002. Prior to that state tournament the event was staged a Saratoga Complex in Waukesha where the infields were grass and the outfield fences were 300 feet away. I know there were no automatic home runs at Saratoga. I’d be interested in hearing about any previous walk off home runs at Goodman Diamond.

Be sure to check out the news article on the website where you can learn who the Fastpitch Chronicle Coaches of the Year recipients are for 2015. There are five in all as the Division 1 recipents are a sister/brother combo at DeForest.

I’ve updated some information on the Coaches Honor Roll Pages so check that out and make sure that the information includes any areas where you or the coach at your school should have it listed. I have also updated some of the state records on the website.

Have a great day!

Keep it Rising!
