More snow in the south and much more in the far north

Hurley expects a foot more tonight

I guess we'll just have to let it snow.

Here in Columbia County we had snow again last night. The temperature here right now, as I am typing this is 37 degrees Fahrenheit. There is a slight breeze. Our team is going to play today though.

They won't be playing in the far north. At least not in Hurley. Head Coach Jim Kivisto sent me an e-mail earlier today updating me on the conditions right on the border of Upper Michigan. Here is his report:

Hey Bob, Just giving you an update on what's going on way up north. We still have 2 feet of snow on our field and as I write this it is snowing. We have a storm warning tonight for 12 more inches of snow. Have not been outside yet to practice and may not be able to until May. Hard to keep the girls motivated with all the snow. I will continue to keep in touch with you on how our season is going. Good luck to everyone this year. Jim Kivisto (Hurley)

It really does have to be tough keeping players motivated to practice inside knowing that their entire season may well be compressed into such a short time span. This season makes it two in a row for the teams in the north.

Our fields are available though the rest of this week, Saturday, Tuesday and all day on April 26th. If anyone wants to get games in just contact me. There would be no charge to use our facilities.

The rankings are posted and we are looking at the games played and at a couple of teams that were just outside the voting. Milton, for instance in Division 2 is 5-0 with wins over both Janesville schools, Oregon, Monona Grove as well as Beloit Memorial. Sun Prairie is just on the outside of the Top 20 and was in the top 20 on several ballots. We'll be watching the Cardinals closely as well. It should also be noted that in Division 3, after the news about Maddy Chase returning to the Kenosha St. Joseph Academy lineup that team jumped way up to the top five in the rankings.

Last Saturday at the Woodside Sports Complex Chippewa Falls got one game in and it was against SPASH. Chippewa Falls lost and of course that affected the rankings. However, few knew that Chippewa was missing three or four starters due to ACT testing. When a team is missing 30 to 44% of a lineup is huge. If those up north teams ever start playing games things will shake out in the rankings world.

Today is the final day that coaches can join the WFSCA and it must be done with a credit or debit card. Go to wfsca.org and take care of business or your players wind up paying the consequences of a coach's choice not to join or failure to get it done on time. It's $40 for a head coach and the head coach must be a member of WFSCA in order for the players on that team to be considered for any post season WFSCA honors which include All District, All State, Academic All State etc.

Have a great day even though it surely does not feel like a fastpitch day out there.

Keep it Rising!

Bob
