Tuesday Game Summaries

Madison LaFollette 11, Madison Memorial 1

Madison Lafollette's senior pitcher Nicole Newman, who was the 2013 Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the Year when she accounted for 311 strikeouts in 143 innings, began the 2014 season in the same fashion as she finished the 2013 campaign. Newman recorded 17 strikeouts during a six inning Madison Lafollette 11-1 win over Madison Memorial. Memorial, who just the day earlier, beat Sun Prairie, 3-2, got an unearned run in the first inning off of Newman and the rest of the Lancers. However, Memorial never threatened again after the first inning. Newman shook off a little early rust when she walked two batters in the first inning and one in the second frame but settled down nicely after that and completed the game by throwing 96 pitches.

Lafollette, who struggled to score runs during the 2013 season, had their bats come to life and recorded 13 hits and had three multiple hit performers. Sophomore Riley Zempel had 3 hits including a triple while catcher Amy Lanzendorf and right fielder Ally Counts each had a couple of knocks for Lafollette.

West De Pere 4, Shawano 3

At West De Pere, Shawano rallied from a 4-1 deficit but a diving catch by West De Pere’s leftfielder with two outs in the 7th inning preserved a 4-3 victory in both teams’ Bay Conference opener.

Nicki Ainsworth’s single in the top of the sixth started Shawano’s comeback. Ainsworth and Alli Raddant scored on ground balls from Brianna Laabs and LaRissa O’Kimosh to pull the Hawks within 4-3. Freshman shortstop Sage Henning led off the seventh with a walk, and West De Pere misplayed Courtney Baumann’s bunt to give the Hawks a prime scoring opportunity. After two unproductive outs, Nicki Ainsworth’s drive into short left field was snared by the Phantoms’ Marijo Evers to preserve the victory.

Nicki Ainsworth had two hits of Shawano’s three hits.

Courtney Baumann took the loss, allowing five hits and four runs in 4.1 innings. She struck out three batters. Sydney Schreiber pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out one. The Hawks were sparked on defense by 3B Brianna Laabs, and an excellent running catch by LF Briana Boda.

The Hawks return to action at Denmark Thursday.

Poynette 11, Belleville 1

Junior pitcher Jordan Blochwitz tossed a second consecutive two-hitter and the Pumas went on to beat Belleville 11-1 in five innings. Sophomore utility player Riley Barnharst had two doubles, Shelby Wheeler and Dani Treinen both doubled for the Pumas. Poynette is now 2-0 on the season.

2nd game of the year and 2nd game in 2 nights for the eagles. Well played game all around by the entire team on offense and on defense! After getting off to a rocky start in the top of the 1st where Junior pitcher Emily Kircher walked 3 batters and the eagles gave up 2 runs they came back with a great response in the bottom of the 1st by scoring 9 runs on 10 hits and really took control from there. Emily calmed down and pitched a heck of a game the rest of the way with Olivia finishing it up in the 5th........A very tough Colfax team will be a huge challenge on Thursday night as we will host our 3rd straight game due to everyone still dealing with the snow and ice on their fields.

Union Grove 5, Waterford 4

What a good high school softball game tonight. There was a bit of everything tonight from homeruns to big outs in pressure situations to thrown out girls at the plate from the outfield and some miscues that made the game closer than it maybe should have been. All in all UG persevered and came through with a bases loaded, 2 out, infield RBI single from Sam Carey.

Cassidy Kortendick continued her hot hitting ways to start the season hitting her third two run homerun of the year in 6 AB's and Claire Ryan got things going tonight going 3-4 with a double. All in all UG put up 13 hits on a tremendous Maddie Szalewski and Waterford team. Defensively UG has some things to work on as they booted a couple routine plays late and opened the door for a strong Waterford lineup to tie the game in top of the 7th plating 3. The Broncos came back and loaded the bases themselves with 2 outs in the bottom of the frame and got a ground ball in the hole to SS from Sam Carey who beat the throw to 1st for the win.

Lakeside Lutheran 13, New Glarus 2

Bailey Kerr went 3x4 as the Warriors cruised past the Glarner Knights. Elise Matthies got the win on a two-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Appleton East 2, Oshkosh North 0 -- Appleton East 11, Fond du Lac 2

Maddie Durie was the winning pitcher with a one-hitter against Oshkosh North. She also hit a 2 run homeroom. She was the winning pitcher against Fond du Lac as well.

Luxemburg-Casco 4, Seymour 0

A young L-C team got its season off to a good start with the 4-0 win. Three freshmen were in the lineup. One L-C coach said, "We're going to have to win games early with our pitching and defense as our bats are not there yet."

Xavier 10 , Berlin 0

At Appleton, Erin Powers tossed a five-inning no-hitter to spark the Hawks’ win. Powers struck out seven and walked just one in the season-opening win.

“Oh my gosh, a lot of nerves out there, even my seniors,” said Xavier coach Lori England. “Erin, I think she was nervous at first when she started but just got stronger as the game went on.”
