Laona/Wabeno Co-Head coaches DAnielle Peterson and Scott Tinsman welcomed back five seniors who were starters on the 2019 team. As a matter of fact they did not lose any starters to the class of 2020.
Tinsman enters his 13th season at the helm while Peterson is in the midst of her 11th year. All in all the program has a record of 150-68 under their tutelage. They see themselves and Florence as the favorites to win the conference title this season and that those two teams are the sectional favorites.
Returning all conference players are: junior shortstop Elizabeth Krawze, junior catcher Paige Peterson; senior outfielder Haila Babich, senior infielder Kylie Higgins and senior pitcher Kiara Moravec. Other players opponents should watch out for are Grace Krawse a sophomore infielder and pitcher along with Grace Novak a senior outfielder.
"This year our team's strength is experience," said Coach Peterson. We are most likely one of teh few teams to have this coming off a year wiht no official season. We have five starting seniors and we did not lose a single starter over from the cla s of 2020. Our team did manage to play last summer through club leagues to keep their skills advancing."
She added that with the senior-heavy group their expectations are very high. They expect to have success but will not allow it to be given to them. "This group is one of the fundamentally sound groups we have ever coached and we are excited for this team to shine," Peterson added.
We will keep a close eye on the Northern Lakes Conference and hope for game summaries to arrive in the FPC inbox. Laona/Wabeno plays in Division 5 when tournament time starts so teams like Wausaukee and of course Florence enter into the picture in the post season. Of course a quick look at the lower group of that sectional shows Stevens Point Pacelli and Wiscosin Rapids Assumption, two private schools with a great history of success on the statewide scene. The last time Laona/Wabeno advanced to the Final Four was in 2003 where they lost the semi-final.
